Alexander J. Verno

Alexander "Al" J. Verno, age 91, resident of Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center, formerly of West 33rd Street, died Sunday December 7, 2008 at Saint Vincent Health Center after a brief illness.

He was born May 8, 1917 in Erie, a son of the late Algerino and Assunta "Susie" Trolli Verno. He lived in Erie his entire life. He worked at Bucyrus Erie, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed spending time with his family and had a special relationship with his grandson Jason.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Verno; one brother, Alfred Verno and two sisters, Alice Buckner and Aida Roos. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dora M. Viveralli Verno of Erie; one daughter, Maryanne Szewczyk and her husband Larry of Erie; one son, Mark Verno of Corry, PA; two brothers, Joseph Verno and Paul Verno both of Erie. He is also survived by one grandson, Jason Szewczyk and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Thursday and a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, 816 West 26th Street, at times to be announced.

Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center, 227 West 22nd Street, Erie, PA 16502.
