Alphonso V. Rossi
Alphonso V. Rossi, 94, of Erie, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2014 at the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center. Born December 12, 1919 in Recale, Italy, he was the son of the late Peter and Carmella Rossi.
Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during service and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
He worked as a clerk and later as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Erie for 32 years, retiring in 1980.
A creative man of diverse talents, Al excelled in gardening, woodworking, and designing. He exercised daily and enjoyed traveling, reading, and cooking. His pizza and spaghetti sauce were legendary. He was devoted to his family and worked hard to provide them with a good life.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Kohler Rossi, his daughter, Marjorie Rossi , and his sister Alphonzina Rossi.
He is survived by his 2 daughters, Jane Rossi of Saline, MI and Alice Rossi Baird and husband Hugh of Enola, PA; 4 grandchildren, Annmarie Buzas Dailey and husband Andrew, Grace Buzas, Brendan Baird and Meghan Baird, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and may attend a service there on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th Street, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the VA Medical Center, 135 East 38th Street, Erie, PA 16504.
