Beatrice E. "Betty" Hayes Owens, age 85, formerly of 1056 West 27th Street, died Thursday, September 13, 2007 at Sarah Reed Retirement Center after an extended illness.

She was born October 28, 1921 in Erie, a daughter of the late William Patrick and Barbara Mertz Hayes. She had worked at General Electric and was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She was active in Sacred Heart School Parent Teacher's Association (PTA), serving as their President for many years. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and reading.

She was the youngest of five brothers and four sisters who preceded her in death along with her husband Joseph J. Owens, Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith O. Roth and her husband Andrew of Cleveland, OH and Shelley K. Thayer and her husband Allan of Erie; two sons, Joseph J. Owens of Erie and James P. Owens and his wife Jill of Flushing, NY and seven grandchildren, Kimberly Thayer Clear, Laura Thayer Orlando, Kristen K. Thayer, Justin, Brent, Natalie and Juliette Owens and one great-granddaughter, Audra Thayer Clear. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and may attend a Service there on Monday at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sarah Reed Retirement, 227 West 22nd Street, Erie, PA 16502 or to the Achievement Center, 101 East 6^th St., Erie, PA 16507.arrangements.
