Bernard "Ben" Szumigala

Bernard "Ben" Szumigala, age 66, of Erie, died Monday August 31, 2009 after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Erie he was born August 27, 1943, a son of the late Bernard and Theresa DiCarlo Szumigala.

He graduated from Strong Vincent High School and from Gannon University; where he received a degree in accounting. He served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War. He was the owner and operator of Teresa's Italian Deli. He was a member of Probus and enjoyed golfing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grace Riazzi Szumigala.

He is survived by one daughter, Teresa M. Szumigala and one son, Bernard "Ben" Szumigala III both of Erie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 pm and Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm and may attend a service there on Saturday at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Paul RC Church, 1617 West 17th Street, at 10 am. A Christian Wake Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday at 3 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund, Palace Business Center 915 State St., Erie, PA 16501.
