David J. Minnis, 66, of Erie, passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born April 9, 1951 in Erie, a son of the late Robert Minnis, Sr. and Louise Szymanowski Minnis.
David was a graduate of Academy High School Class of 1969. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
He loved his dogs Chico and Coco. David enjoyed art, photography, car racing, driving his 1986 Camaro, reading, collecting books, playing pool, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was an avid collector of Star Trek memorabilia.
David donated to numerous charities including the Erie Humane Society and veterans organizations; especially The Wounded Warriors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Clair and John Minnis.
He is survived by four brothers, Robert Minnis, Jr. (Jane) and Michael Minnis both of Erie, Terry Foy (Barb) of Erie and Frank Foy (Dee) of NC; five sisters, Maryann Dunbar (Michael) and June Minnis both of Erie, Roberta Gutowski (Stan) of West Springfield, PA, Cathryn Wescott (Steve) of Pittsburgh, and Kitty Stanyard (Tim) of Erie; many nieces, nephews, special cousins and dear friends, Chris and Mary Blakeslee, Glenn Gama, and Bill Jackson. He is also survived by his attorney and dear friend, James Lucht. David appreciated his caring neighbors who always looked out for him.
Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Thursday from 5 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service there at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
David's family would like to thank the VA Hospital and Staff for all their wonderful care and friendship for over 40 years and Saint Vincent Hospital's ICU Unit and Select Specialty Hospital for their care.
