Dr. Quentin R. "Doc" Orlando
Dr. Quentin R. "Doc" Orlando, age 91, of Erie, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his family following an extended illness. He was born November 8, 1919 in Erie, a son of the late Michael and Angeline DiLoreto Orlando.
He was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School in Erie; attended Cathedral College in Erie; and graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. Dr. Orlando practiced Optometry in Erie for 53 years. He believed in public service and giving back to the community. He served as Erie City Councilman from 1962 to 1966 and 1968 to 1972. He was Pennsylvania State Senator from 1973 to 1980 and had been Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Optometric Licensing Board for 12 years, having been appointed by Governors Ray Shafer and Tom Ridge. During his last year of service, at age 83, he was the oldest sitting member of a State Board or Commission, something he took great pride in.
He was a member of the Exchange Club of Erie; Probus Club of Erie; Council of Service Clubs; Commodore Perry Boys Baseball of Erie and Northwest PA Optometric Society. In addition he was a life member of Local, State and National Optometric Associations; Times Old Newsies; Probus Club of Erie; Wolves Club of Erie; Erie Maennerchor Club and St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather
He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Orlando Chiamardas; two brothers, John R. Orlando and Robert J. Orlando; and a great-granddaughter, Hailey G. Orlando.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Emma Jean Boderocco Orlando, whom he married on July 6, 1947; two sons, Q. Gregory Orlando and his wife Nancy, Douglas S. Orlando and his wife Sandra; all of Erie, and one daughter, Susan Pavick and her husband Keith of Pittsburgh, PA; one sister, Eufemia "Fay" Grimaldi, of Erie; eight grandchildren, Angela M. Perih and her husband Patrick; Sandra J. Nardone and her husband Jay, Leslie Orlando Ditka and her husband David, David Q. Orlando, Gregor A. Orlando, Matthew D. Orlando and his wife Kathleen, Dr. Quentin M. Orlando and his wife Kim, Brad M. Orlando and dear friend Carleen Wolf; and ten great-grandchildren, Patrick Q. Perih, Owen O. Perih, Emma J. Perih, Ayajan M. Nardone, Isabella G. Nardone, Marco Joseph Nardone, Hunter M. Orlando, Mason M. Orlando, Quentin A. Orlando, and Colton J. Orlando.
Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service there on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. There will be a Christian Wake Service in the funeral home on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hamot Foundation, 201 State St., Erie, PA 16550.
