Dr. Robert H. Enterline
Dr. Robert H. Enterline, age 87, of Fort Pierce, FL, formerly of Erie, died Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Forestview Skilled Nursing Center after a brief illness. He was born March 14, 1927 in Mt. Joy, PA, a son of the late Willis and Mary Heistand Enterline.
Bob graduated from York High School and served in the United States Army from May 1944 through April 1948 in Germany as a Military Police Officer. He was a First Lieutenant and went on to serve in the reserves for another four years. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and also the Army of Occupation Medal.
Bob graduated college at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He then went on to graduate from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery where he met and married Jo Anne, the love of his life.
Bob was the past president of the Erie County Dental Society, and the Pennsylvania State Society of Orthodontists. He practiced orthodontics for a short period of time in Oil City, Pennsylvania and then, moved his young family to Erie, at a time when he knew no one locally and continued in the private practice of orthodontics until he retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Erie Yacht Club, a former member of the Erie Maennerchor Club, and the Kahkwa Club. He also was a Mason and formerly an active member of the service organization, the Sertoma Club. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and also attended Lakewood United Methodist Church and enjoyed church services in Chautauqua, NY at the Institute and in Vero Beach, FL.
As a youth he qualified for and participated in the World Championship Soap Box Derby in Akron, OH. Bob was an avid sailor, motorcycle rider, and downhill skier. Whether he was on the slopes, his bike or the water he loved to go fast! He was an active man and a very good tennis player which he continued to enjoy well into his 80s. He also was a good racquetball, and handball player. He loved to fly and soloed small aircraft and earned his glider pilot license. He and his beloved wife, Jo toured on a motorcycle for many years in Europe, Italy, Germany, England, and many other eastern European countries.
He enjoyed making wine and was known to appreciate a glass of dry red wine.
He lived life large. Bob was a generous man and loved his family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Hocke and a sister in law, Marge Enterline.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jo Anne Sandbower Enterline of Fort Pierce, FL; one daughter, Sandra E. Enterline (David Walker) of San Francisco, CA; three sons, Randall H. Enterline (Alex) of Neshanic, NJ, Bradley K. Enterline (Lauri) of Erie and Dr. Barry A. Enterline (Lisa) of Webster, NY and his brother, John Enterline of Lancaster, PA. He is also survived by his brother in law John Sandbower (Nancy) of Baltimore, MD and sister in law Betsy Sandbower of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Ian, Dwight, Kristen and Stuart Enterline, Jessica Mathis, James Light (Mary Grace), Emmett and Arlo Walker, and Nathan and Weston Enterline and three great grandchildren.
No calling hours will be observed. A private service and burial was held at the family's convenience. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Lakewood United Methodist Church on Sunday August 10th at 3pm with a reception immediately following at the Erie Yacht Club. Memorials may be made to Lakewood United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice. The John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, is handling arrangements.
