James J. "Jim" Fromyer, age 88, of 9156 Shadduck Road, McKean, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Edinboro Manor Nursing Home. He was born February 13, 1920 in Erie, a son of the late John Fromyer and Elizabeth Drew Fromyer. Step-son of the late Effie Fromyer and Charles Hann.

He retired from Fleet Sales & Parts and also worked at Troyers, Robie Meat Packing and Swifts & Rausslers.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Campaign. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks on December 7, 1941 during the Pearl Harbor Attack. He returned to visit Pearl Harbor with his family in 1992. He was invited to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Service held in Harrisburg on December 7, 2007. The city of Erie proclaimed February 13, 2008 as the James J. Fromyer Day for his service to our county. Jim served as the Grand Marshall for the American Legion Memorial Day Parade in Fairview on May 26, 2008.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #742 and VFW Post #470, PA survivors of the Pearl Harbor Attack and the Disabled American Veterans. Jim will always be remembered for his compassionate ways.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Gertrude Johnson Fromyer and a sister, Mary Ellen Phillipo. He is survived by his daughter Cathy Patterson of McKean; step-son, John Cole and his wife Carol of Temecula, CA; one brother, William Fromyer and his wife Kathy of Erie; one sister, Grace Howells and her husband Richard of Fairview and six grandchildren, James Potter, Kate Patterson, John Patterson, Cynthia Peterson, John Cole Jr. and Mary Murphy. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his good friend and caregiver, Corey.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Sunday from 7 to 9 and may attend a Funeral Mass on Monday at Saint Francis Xavier RC Church, 8880 W. Main, McKean, at 11 am. Burial will be in Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family in care of the Funeral Home.
