John D. Mong

John D. Mong, age 80, of Erie, passed away at home on Thursday, December 20, 2012, from an extended illness with his loving family close by his side.

He was born in Erie on December 5, 1932, a son of the late D.O. and Marie Weigle Mong. John served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1952-1956.

He graduated from the Auto and Diesel College in Nashville, TN. John was the proprietor of Mong's Atlantic Service Station on 32nd and Washington Ave., as well as, Mong's Atlantic 2 Service Station on the corner of 26th and Raspberry. He later went into a partnership and became co-proprietor of Eduardo's Tavern on 26th and Colonial Ave. Along with his partner, he went on to purchase the West Ridge Trailer Park and over the years had owned and operated numerous income properties in the Erie area.

John was a lifetime member of several Erie Clubs including the Zukor Club, East Erie Turners, Sunflower Club, Sienbenbuerger Club and the VFW. He was also a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club.

John retired at the age of 50 and enjoyed spending time with his entire family, getting together as often as possible for family gatherings, including numerous tailgating trips to Penn State in the motor home for football games.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Rosalia A. Fabrizio Mong; one daughter, Marie Troyer and her husband Kevin of Erie; four sons, John Mong, and his wife Kelly of Amherst, NY, Christopher Mong and his wife Christine, Michael Mong, and Nicholas Mong and Kathy all of Erie; one sister, Mary Margaret Schaaf of Erie; one brother, Richard Mong and his wife Remle of Roseville, CA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Aaron, Brandon, Hannah, Lauren, Sarah, Morgan, and Jack Mong, and Alyssa and Noah Troyer; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of VNA Hospice, especially Caroline, Carrie, Hope, Stephanie and Christie for their loving care and compassion.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a prayer service there on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Paul RC Church, 1617 Walnut Street, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society , 2115 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 16508, or to the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, 130 West 8th Street, Suite 216, Erie, PA 16501.
