Joseph J. Palermo, age 95, 2303 Poplar Street, died Friday, June 6, 2008 at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born January 30, 1913 in Erie, a son of the late Donato and Maria Palermo.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He saw action as a machine gunner with Patton's Third Army in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhineland. He received the Combat Infantryman's Badge and numerous other combat action ribbons and medals. He had worked as a plasterer and tavern owner and had retired from the Erie Parking Authority. He enjoyed gardening, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Besides his parents and his step-mother Maria, he was preceded in death by his wife, Immacolata "Esther" P. Iesue Palermo; two brothers, Michael and Tony Palermo and one sister, Mary Peters. He is survived by one daughter, Paula Palermo Hayes and her husband, Michael of Erie; and three grandchildren, Bryana Teresa Hayes, Michael Jesse Hayes and Gabrielle Margueritte Hayes, all of Erie. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Friday at 9:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 816 West 26th Street, at 9:30 am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Joe's family would like to express deepest appreciation to the staff of Erie Veteran's Administration Medical Center, St. Mary's Adult Day Care, his Homehealth Aide, Dara Bliss and VA volunteer John Nosko. The assistance of all of these individuals in addition to my supportive family and special niece Teresa Wieczorek enabled my father to reside at home.
