Louise Marie (Filippi) Bertone of Erie, age 98, passed away on July 13, 2024 at the LECOM Senior Living Center. The cause was congestive heart failure.
She was born on June 8, 1926, the youngest child of Ernesto and Palmira (Carnicelli) Filippi. Louise attended Saint Michael Elementary School, where she was known by her Americanized name, Louise Phillips. She graduated from Villa Maria Academy in 1944.
Upon graduation, Louise worked for Western Union in Erie, and following World War II for Western Union in Syracuse, N.Y., and Washington, D.C. She was also employed by Louis Marx and Co., in Erie, in the Accounts Department. After she raised her family, Louise worked part-time in the kitchen at the Villa Maria Elementary School. Later, she became the head cook and manager of the cafeteria.
Louise married Anthony Bertone on June 12, 1948. Tony died on April 24, 1998.
In addition to her parents and husband, Louise was preceded in death by an infant son, Baby Boy Bertone, her brothers Luigi (age 10), Lelio ("Lou"), and Leno Filippi; her sister Lena Donatucci; sisters-in-law Angela (Lemmo) Filippi, and Caroline (Bartone) Alvarez; brothers-in-law Vincent Donatucci, Vincent ("Red") Alvarez, Theodore ("Ted") Bartone; and her husband's parents Angelo and Florence (Vendetti) Bertone.
She is survived by her sons Richard, of Arlington, VA; Thomas, and his wife Robin, of Lawrenceville, GA; sister-in-law Olga (Simonelli) Filippi, of Erie; goddaughters Bernice (Alessi) Morris, of Gold Hill, OR; Mary Elizabeth Goetz, of McKean; Patricia ("Trish") Cirillo, of Erie; and godsons Frank Yoculan, Jr. and Vincent Toscano, Jr., along with many nieces and nephews.
The family gratefully thanks the dedicated staff of the LECOM Senior Living Center (4 West), Hospice, and the Visiting Nurse Association for the kind and compassionate care they provided Louise.
Friends are invited to call on Friday at Saint George Church, 5145 Peach Street, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass there at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Saint George Church, 5145 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509 or to the charity on one's choice.
