Nicola "Nick" E. DiPlacido, age 84, passed away peacefully Monday, February 24, 2014, surrounded by his family at Veterans Affairs Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Nick was born in Pennapiedimonte, Italy on August 21, 1929, the son of the late Cesidio and Maria DiPlacido. Nick came to the United States in 1948 and served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He married his wife Helen "Lola" Bruno in 1954, with whom he had three children. In 1956, Nick started his own business, DiPlacido and Fratto Masonry, that became DiPlacido Masonry, in 1980 which he owned until his retirement in 1992. His talents and masonry skills can be seen throughout the greater Erie area. Nick was a builder at heart, always creating or building something either on the job or in his free time.

He also enjoyed gardening, naps, cooking, baking bread, making homemade wine, and spending time at his camp. Most of all Nick loved spending time with his family and was a devoted Papa to is grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by two sisters, Concetta and Anna DiPlacido.

Nick is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lola, as well as three sons, Mario (Lori) of Erie, Nicola (Karen) of Waterford, PA, and Frank of Erie. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Nicola (Jenn) of State College, PA; Abbey of Madison, CT; Mario of Erie; and Dayna of Waterford, PA. Additionally, he is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for their loving care and support.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry St., on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Friday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Stephen RC Church, 1237 West 21st St, Erie, PA 16502, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Saint Stephen RC Church.
