Nino Bucarelli

Nino Bucarelli, age 90, of Erie, passed away peacefully, at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. He was born in Rende (Cosenza) Italy, son of the late Pietro Bucarelli and Rosina Turco Bucarelli.

Nino was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School and Gannon University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Languages.

Nino served in the United States Army during the Korean War, earning the rank of staff sergeant.

He devoted 39 years of his life to education having taught at Strong Vincent High School, East High School, Smethport Area Junior and Senior High School, and Fort LeBoeuf High School. He taught Italian, Spanish, French, English, and History. Nino retired from the Erie School District after spending the majority of his career at Strong Vincent High School. Nino was a lifetime member of PSEA-Retired and NEA-Retired and Probus.

Nino was a loving husband and dedicated father. He enjoyed entertaining his friends with homemade Italian food and wine. His hobbies were making wine, prosciutto, capicolla, salsiccia, and supersata. He also enjoyed reading, research, writing, and music.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Gladimiro "Bucky" Bucarelli.

Nino is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Maria Loizzo Bucarelli; a son, Pietro Bucarelli; two daughters, Liliana Kennedy and husband Gordon Kennedy and Silvana Mirarchi and husband Dr. Ferdinando Mirarchi; four grandchildren, Gordon and Ciarra Kennedy and Gianna and Ferdinando Mirarchi II; and one great-grandchild, Carter Kennedy. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, JoAnn Bucarelli; two nieces, Rosina Jones and husband Brian and Lisa Abbate and husband John; two nephews, David Bucarelli and John Paul Bucarelli; four great-nieces, Briannna Jones, Mira Abbate, Gabriella and Cecilia Bucarelli; and one great-nephew, Justin Jones.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. and may attend a service there on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Paul Church, 1617 Walnut Street, at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Saint Paul Church, 1617 Walnut Street, Erie, PA 16502 or to the Regional Cancer Center, 2500 West 12th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
