Robert J. Herbert Sr
Robert J. Herbert Sr. "Bob", age 94 of Erie, Pennsylvania passed away on March 20, 2022, surrounded by family. The youngest of seven children, he was born July 17, 1927, in Erie, Pennsylvania to the late Pius and Ida Herbert.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-three years, Immaculate (DeSantis) Herbert and a son, David Herbert. He was also preceded in death by his siblings Marie Breckley, Irene Stablein, Ruth Herbert, Elaine Wilson and Edward Herbert. He is survived by his brother Donald Herbert (Virginia), his sons Robert Herbert Jr (Karen) and Joseph Herbert (Lisa), and his daughters Lisa Herbert-Dunbar (Brian) and Mary Herbert (Rachel). He is also survived by his grandchildren Michelle Herbert and Mary and Amanda Dunbar, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Academy high school, Bob sang as first tenor in a school A cappella singing group that toured the country. He had a long career as a manager at the A&P Grocery store. He founded and operated the Summit Sports Center and retired from employment with the Millcreek School District in 1989. He also developed and patented Old Oak Waterproofing and enjoyed making homemade root beer.
Bob had a lifelong love and knowledge of the outdoors, and taught numerous friends and family to hunt, fish, and respect nature and the environment. His son Joseph Herbert was part owner of Sullivan's Pub and Eatery, where Bob was well known and loved for his outgoing and gregarious personality. A hard worker, Bob sometimes worked two jobs but always found time for his family. He cared for his wife Immaculate during her long struggle with cancer. He passed along his amazing work ethic, sense of humor, and selfless personality to his children and he will be dearly missed.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and may attend a Funeral Service there on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Presque Isle Audubon Society, C.A.S.T. for Kids, Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive, STE 8, Erie, PA 16505 or to the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association, PO Box 8892 Erie, PA 16505.
