Sarah Maria Pieri
Sarah Maria Pieri, age 91, of Erie, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Golden Living Western Reserve. She was born April 10, 1919, a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Bianca Corsi Pieri. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Perino and Patrick Pieri and her dear friend, Frank Majewski. Sarah was a lifetime Erie resident, a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Church. She retired from General Electric in 1983.
Survivors include her brother, Phil Pieri; a nephew, Kenneth Pieri and his wife Chris, and their three daughters, all of Jacksonville, FL; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Also survived by her Our Lady of Peace family and friends.
Sarah was an avid sports fan, given the nickname of "Jock" by her niece, Maria. She enjoyed traveling, which included Spain, the Holy Land, Hawaii and eight excursions to Rome, Italy. She loved reading and knitting, and also holding football pool and calling Bingo at her home away from home at Niagara Village.
Sarah took pleasure in participating in many OLP functions. She was the weekday Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister, member of the Rosary Society and the Resurrection Choir. She volunteered at IHS at Bayside Nursing Home, and at Saint Vincent Health Center. She was Bursar of St. Mark's Auxiliary, GE Quarter Century Club member, Past President of the American Business Women's Association and recipient of its Woman of the Year Award.
Friends are invited to call on Friday at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm and may attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday at Our Lady of Peace RC Church, 2401 West 38th Street, at 10 am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church Endowment Fund, 2401 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 16506, to the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, 130 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16501 or to Asera Care Hospice, 1600 Peninsula Dr., Erie, PA 16505.
