Thomas J Scalzitti
Thomas J Scalzitti (Tommy Scalz), 65 of Erie, Pennsylvania passed away on November 12, 2015. Tommy was born March 8, 1950 in Erie, PA to Timothy J Scalzitti, Sr. and Mary Perrino Scalzitti.
Tommy was a proud graduate of Erie Strong Vincent High School, Class of 1968, where he excelled as a catcher for the Colonels. Tommy served in the Pennsylvania National Guard where he was honored for his expert marksmanship, and was deployed to Johnstown, PA to aid during the Flood in 1977. He was a Bricklayer by trade, working often beside his father Timmy. Tommy formed a partnership with his lifelong friend, Donald Calabrese to own and operate Scalz and D.C's Bells Café (Home of the Sca Burger) and The Tivoli Tavern, both on the Erie West side. After 15 years in the tavern business, Tommy then started his career with the Erie School District where he served last as Supervisor of Maintenance until his retirement in 2011.
An avid Cincinnati Reds fan, Tommy enjoyed sports and vacationing in Las Vegas for many years. His love of sports created a personal relationship with the three time Golden Glove winner Joe Pepitone, whom he hosted during his scouting trips for the Yankees while in Erie. Tommy also engaged legendary baseball manager Tommy Lasorda in many conversations over the years. He will be remembered for his fierce loyalty to his family and friends. Tommy had many friends that he made in the bar business and later at the National Club "Tommy Scalz" will be sadly missed, but the family takes great comfort in the knowledge that he is now reunited with his beloved Uncle Johnny.
Tommy was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Perrino Scalzitti, and many beloved family members.
Tommy is survived his father, Timothy J. Scalzitti Sr. His children, Nicole Scalzitti Barbato (Joseph) Nyack, NY, Thomas Joseph (TJ) Scalzitti (Pittsburgh) and Carla Scalzitti Sleppy (Derek) Indiana, PA and his two beautiful grandchildren Michael and Logan Barbato.
Brothers, Timothy J Scalzitti Jr. Erie, John W Scalzitti (Mary Lou) Brecksville, Ohio Sisters, Patricia Scalzitti Emery (Edward) Highland Heights, Ohio and Pamela Scalzitti Kwiatkowski (James) Erie and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and are invited to a service there on Tuesday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th Street at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery
